18 Months in the Life of an AI Writer
What a wild ride these past two and a half years have been! When we first started experimenting with AI for fiction writing, none of us could have predicted how rapidly the technology would evolve—or how dramatically it would transform our creative processes.
If you’ve been following the Future Fiction Academy for the past two years, you’ve witnessed this evolution firsthand. The changes have been nothing short of incredible, both in what AI tools can do and in people’s attitudes toward them. But here’s the thing: this book isn’t going to dive into either of those topics. You won’t find philosophical debates about AI’s place in creative industries or technical explanations of how large language models work.
This also isn’t meant to be an A-to-Z primer or a “getting started with AI” guide. We have another great book called AI Basics for Fiction Authors that covers those fundamentals beautifully. If you’re looking for those basics, I’d encourage you to start there.
So what is this book? Think of it as a practical journal—a collection of tips, tricks, and insights compiled from 18 months of our newsletters. It’s more of a day-in-the-life perspective: what’s working now, our thoughts at the time, the techniques our community of publishing authors are actually using in the AI trenches. These are the real-world strategies that have helped hundreds of writers in the FFA community transform their creative processes and productivity.
I’ll be honest—structuring this book was a challenge. The original newsletters weren’t written with a grand organizational scheme in mind; they were written to address the questions and needs that emerged as our community explored this new territory together. But as I reviewed all of that content, a natural progression began to emerge.
Some tips clearly worked better for beginners just taking their first steps with AI. Others seemed to resonate with intermediate users who had mastered the basics and were ready for more sophisticated approaches. And still others spoke to advanced users who were branching out into other forms of AI or finding increasingly creative ways to leverage these tools.
That’s when the seasonal metaphor clicked into place. Your journey with AI writing follows natural seasons of growth and transformation:
Spring represents those first discoveries—the awakening of new possibilities as you learn the basics of prompting and begin experimenting with simple projects.
